Berkeley ALPR Policy
The Berkeley Police Department states that they use ALPRs to find missing or stolen vehicles, wanted persons, missing persons, and for other investigations. ALPRs can only be used for official law enforcement business and trainings are given to officers before operating ALPRs or data. Officers must verify the vehicle visually before taking any action of contact.
Policy Stated by Berkeley
- Data is encrypted and stored by Flock Safety following Criminal Justice Information System security protocols
- Only trained officers with a legitimate need can access ALPR data
- Audit logs for searches are tracked
- Data is not used for immigration enforcement
- Facial recognition software is not used
